Surgical Outcomes, Complications, and Long-Term Functionality for Free Vascularized Fibula Grafts in the Pediatric Population: A 17-Year Experience and Systematic Review of the Literature
Conclusion This review and institutional series demonstrate the versatility of FVFG to facilitate limb reconstruction in large defects or serve as a salvage option in complex cases. While immediate and donor-site complications are uncommon, delayed recipient-site complications are frequent, and patients and families should be counseled regarding this expectation. Though technically challenging, excellent long-term graft viability and functional recovery can be achieved in the large majority of patients....

Current trends in chemical modifications of magnetic nanoparticles for targeted drug delivery in cancer chemotherapy.
Authors: Gholami A, Mousavi SM, Hashemi SA, Ghasemi Y, Chiang WH, Parvin N Abstract Nowadays, magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have been rapidly investigated and attracted worldwide attention due to their great potential as mediators of heat for treating hyperthermia and their possibility to deliver drugs at specific locations, which can thereby limit systematic effects. Cancer therapy via MNPs proposes novel properties rather than normal methods such as almost zero side effects and a high-efficiency...

Resveratrol has been demonstrated to induce both autophagy and apoptosis in several human cancer cell lines. The aim of this study was to investigate whether resveratrol modulates autophagy and apoptosis in MOLT-4 human lymphoblastic leukemia...

ZNF143 Suppresses Cell Apoptosis and Promotes Proliferation in Gastric Cancer via ROS/p53 Axis.
Conclusion: ZNF143, as a tumor oncogene, promoted the proliferation of GC cells both in vitro and in vivo, indicating that ZNF143 might function as a novel target for GC therapy.in vitro. The downregulation of ZNF143 facilitated cell apoptosis. ZNF143 decreased the ROS level in GC cells, resulting in the reduction of cell apoptosis. Transfection with p53 reversed the antiapoptotic effect of ZNF143, while pifithrin-in vivo was examined using tumor xenograft assay. PMID: 32076462 [PubMed - in...

Functional Characterization of a Missense Variant of MLH1 Identified in Lynch Syndrome Pedigree.
In conclusion, our findings widen the genotypic spectrum of MLH1 mutations responsible for LS. This study increases the phenotypic spectrum of LS which will certainly help the clinicians in diagnosing LS in multigeneration families. This study also puts emphasis on the importance of genetic counselling for the benefit of asymptomatic carriers of MMR gene variants who are at higher risk of LS. Should we invest in biological age predictors to treat colorectal cancer in older adults?
Publication date: March 2020Source: European Journal of Surgical Oncology, Volume 46, Issue 3Author(s): Sara Hägg, Juulia JylhäväAbstractColorectal cancer (CRC) is a chronic disease of the old population with slow development progressing into clinical signs and symptoms. Biological aging is characterized by e.g. mitochondrial dysfunction and epigenetic alterations (e.g. methylation) - mechanisms that are also important in cancer development. For CRC, specific types of tumors are distinguishable by...

Inhibitors of the protein-protein interaction between phosphorylated p62 and Keap1 attenuate chemoresistance in a human hepatocellular carcinoma cell line.
Authors: Yasuda D, Ohe T, Takahashi K, Imamura R, Kojima H, Okabe T, Ichimura Y, Komatsu M, Yamamoto M, Nagano T, Mashino T Abstract Resistance to anticancer agents has been an obstacle to developing therapeutics and reducing medical costs. Whereas sorafenib is used for the treatment of human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), resistance limits its efficacy. p62, a multifunctional protein, is overexpressed in several HCC cell lines, such as Huh-1 cells. CONCLUSIONS: For peripheral lung cancer, the measurement on CT and routine MRI sequences can potentially replace each other after comprehensive consideration of examination purposes, but for central lung cancer, alternative use of CT and MRI in evaluating treatment responses for lung cancer should needs extra attention. The diameter measurement of lung cancer on DWI is consistent with that on T1WI and T2WI, suggesting that DWI can provide functional and morphological information. PMID: 32083610...

Sphingomyelin phosphodiesterase 3 methylation and silencing in oral squamous cell carcinoma results in increased migration and invasion and altered stress response.
Authors: Jabalee J, Towle R, Lawson J, Dickman C, Garnis C Abstract Neutral sphingomyelinase 2 (nSMase2), the product of the sphingomyelin phosphodiesterase 3 (SMPD3) gene, catalyzes the hydrolysis of sphingomyelin to ceramide. Ceramide acts on various signaling pathways to influence cell proliferation, survival, and stress response. Altered levels of sphingolipids and ceramides have been reported in various cancer types, including oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). OSCC patients exhibit...

Response of a chemo-resistant triple-negative breast cancer patient to a combination of p62-encoding plasmid, Elenagen, and CMF chemotherapy.
We describe below a patient who has shown a response to combination of chemotherapy with Elenagen, a plasmid encoding p62. Elenagen was tested in a previous phase I/II study in patients with refractory solid tumors and shown to be safe. Also, plasmid ability to halt tumor progression and restore sensitivity to chemotherapy was found. Preclinical data supports effects on tumor grade and change the tumor's microenvironment in spontaneous canine breast cancers. We describe here a 48-year old female...
