Neisseria meningitidis as a Cause of Septic Arthritis: An Unusual Case of Periprosthetic Joint Infection
One of the most feared complications after arthroplasty is infection due to its significant impact on patient morbidity. Infection may transfer to the joint at the time of surgery or be seeded, haematologically, to the prosthetic joint from another infection source. In this case, a 72-year-old female presented with symptoms of septic arthritis seven years after her original arthroplasty surgery. At presentation, she denied trauma and any comorbidity which would predispose her to infection. Culturing...

Diagnosis and Management of Lemierre’s Syndrome Presented with Multifocal Pneumonia and Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis
A 27-year-old female patient initially presented with fever, myalgia, sore throat that progressed to multifocal pneumonia, and cerebral sinus venous thrombosis. A combination of upper respiratory symptoms with tooth infection, positive blood culture for Fusobacterium nucleatum, computed tomography (CT) chest finding of multifocal pneumonia, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) finding of internal jugular vein thrombosis (IJVT) and cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) suggested Lemierre syndrome....

Mental Time Travel and Disjunctivism
Abstract The paper discusses radical constructivism about episodic memory as developed by Kourken Michaelian under the name of “simulationism”, a view that equates episodic memory with mental time travel. An alternative, direct realist view is defended, which implies disjunctivism about the appearance of remembering. While admitting the importance of mental time travel as an underlying cognitive mechanism in episodic memory, as well as the prima facie reasonableness of the simulationist’s...

Emotional appraisal processing of computer-generated facial expressions: an functional near-infrared spectroscopy study
Objective: The current study aims to investigate whether computer generated (CG) expressions of emotion evoke similar emotional appraisal processing in the lateral orbitofrontal cortex (lOFC) compared to real human expressions, as well as how speech cues would influence the processing. Methods: Functional near-infrared spectroscopy was used to measure the neural activations in the prefrontal cortex during emotion recognition task. Thirty normal participants were asked to view videos...

Regulation of LCoR and RIP140 expression in cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and correlation with CIN progression and dedifferentiation
Abstract Purpose Ligand-dependent corepressor (LCoR) and receptor-interacting protein 140 (RIP140/NRIP1) play an important role in the regulation of multiple oncogenic signaling pathways and the development of cancer. LCoR and RIP140 form a nuclear complex in breast cancer cells and are of prognostic value in further prostate and cervical cancer. The purpose of this study was to analyze the regulation of these proteins in the development...

Role of the autophagy-related marker LC3 expression in hepatocellular carcinoma: a meta-analysis
Abstract Background Microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 (LC3), an autophagic gene, has been reported as a vital marker for many diseases and cancers. However, the role of LC3 in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) was not still investigated. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis to examine the association of LC3 with its clinicopathological and prognostic in HCC. ...

An observational study to justify and plan a future phase III randomized controlled trial of metformin in improving overall survival in patients with inoperable pancreatic cancer without liver metastases
Abstract Purpose Metformin has plausible direct and indirect anti-cancer properties against pancreatic adenocarcinoma cells. However, metformin may only be efficacious in patients with inoperable pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) without liver metastases. Absorption may be decreased by gastrointestinal symptoms and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). We aimed to justify and inform a future phase III trial of metformin versus placebo...

Effects of nutraceutical intervention on serum proteins in aged rats
Abstract Aging is associated with many pathophysiological changes that could lead to the onset of degenerative disease. Some of the physiological changes that occur with aging include increased inflammation and decreased stem cell proliferation, leading to decreased capacity for tissue regeneration and loss of function. In previous studies, we and others have found nutraceutical intervention to ameliorate some of the deleterious effects associated with aging. In particular, we...

High-Throughput Identification of Resistance to Pseudomonas syringae pv. Tomato in Tomato using Seedling Flood Assay
The seedling flood assay facilitates rapid screening of wild tomato accessions for the resistance to the Pseudomonas syringae bacterium. This assay, used in conjunction with the seedling bacterial growth assay, can assist in further characterizing the underlying resistance to the bacterium, and can be used to screen mapping populations to determine the genetic basis of resistance.

Parallel Interrogation of β-Arrestin2 Recruitment for Ligand Screening on a GPCR-Wide Scale using PRESTO-Tango Assay
Given that GPCRs are attractive druggable targets, GPCR ligand screening is thus indispensable for the identification of lead compounds and for deorphanization studies. Towards these efforts, we describe PRESTO-Tango, an open-source resource platform used for simultaneous profiling of transient β-arrestin2 recruitment at approximately 300 GPCRs using a TEV-based reporter assay.

Phase 1 study to evaluate safety, tolerability and pharmacokinetics of a novel intra-tympanic administered thiosulfate to prevent cisplatin-induced hearing loss in cancer patients
Summary Cisplatin is a widely used chemotherapy for the treatment of certain solid tumors. Ototoxicity and subsequent permanent hearing loss remain a serious dose-limiting side effect associated with cisplatin treatment. To date, no therapies have been approved to prevent or treat cisplatin-induced hearing loss (CIHL). Sodium thiosulfate effectively inactivates cisplatin through covalent binding and may provide protection against cisplatin-induced ototoxicity. DB-020 is being...

Impact of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio in patients with EGFR-mutant NSCLC treated with tyrosine kinase inhibitors
Summary Background Exon 19 deletion and L858R point mutation in exon 21 of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) are the most commonly encountered mutations in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and predict better clinical outcomes following treatment with EGFR-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). The inflammatory indicator neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in peripheral blood serves as a predictive factor for NSCLC patients treated with chemotherapy. Here,...

P2Y13 and P2X7 receptors modulate mechanically induced adenosine triphosphate release from mast cells
Abstract Subcutaneous mast cells (MCs) are vulnerable to mechanical stimulation from external environment. Thus, MCs immune function could be modulated by their mechanosensitivity. This property has been identified as the trigger mechanism of needling acupuncture, a traditional oriental therapy. Previously we have demonstrated release of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), a stress‐responsive signaling molecule, from mechanical‐perturbed MCs. The current work explores its underlying mechanisms. We...
