On the link between onset clusters and codas in Mbat (Jarawan Bantu)
Abstract This paper explores morphologically-conditioned alternations in Mbat (Jarawan Bantu) verb stems. Some inflectional affixation in Mbat results in resyllabification. The singleton coda of a CGVC verb stem will become the onset of a new syllable following the addition of a vowel-initial suffix (e.g., Perfective -am). What is surprising is that this, in turn, triggers onset simplification in the stem itself (i.e., CV.C-am). Adding further complexity to Mbat is that these alternations...

The structure of cortical bone as revealed by the application of methods for the calcified matrix study
Abstract Calcination and decalcification are basic procedures useful to a morphological approach of a biological, composite material like cortical bone. The study was carried out on a whole human femur conserved in liquid (from an educational collection). Cortical fracturing and SEM observation of vascular canals surface collagen texture was used to study bone deproteination at scalar temperatures (400–1,200°C) and acid bone decalcification at crescent time intervals. Heating burned and...

The role of TiO2 nanotube surface on osseointegration of titanium implants: Biomechanical and histological study in rats
• The titanium oxide nanotube surface was better integrated into the bone than the control surface.• The surface anodization can improve the osseointegration, and it may be very useful to reduce the time required for peri‐implant bone formation. Abstract The nanoscale surface of titanium has been studied to improve the cellular recognition of the biological microenvironment and to increase bone–implant interaction. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of a titanium oxide (TiO2) nanotube...

Proactive and Integrated Management and Empowerment in Parkinson’s Disease: Designing a New Model of Care
Parkinson’s disease is the second most common neurodegenerative condition after Alzheimer’s disease. The number of patients will rise dramatically due to ageing of the population and possibly also due to environmental issues. It is widely recognised that the current models of care for people with Parkinson’s disease or a form of atypical parkinsonism lack continuity, are reactive to problems rather than proactive, and do not adequately support individuals to self-manage. Integrated models of care...

Renal fibrosis is a common final pathological process in the progression of kidney disease. Oleanolic acid is a bioactive pentacyclic triterpenoid and is widely found in medicinal herbs around the world. In this study, we explored the effect of oleanolic acid on renal fibrosis and the underlying molecular mechanisms by using a rat model of unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO). Male Sprague-Dawley rats were orally administered with oleanolic acid (6 mg/kg/d) or vehicle (olive oil) for 21 days after...

The Splitting Crank–Nicolson Scheme with Intrinsic Parallelism for Solving Parabolic Equations
In this paper, a splitting Crank–Nicolson (SC-N) scheme with intrinsic parallelism is proposed for parabolic equations. The new algorithm splits the Crank–Nicolson scheme into two domain decomposition methods, each one is applied to compute the values at (n + 1)th time level by use of known numerical solutions at n-th time level, respectively. Then, the average of the above two values is chosen to be the numerical solutions at (n + 1)th time level. The new algorithm obtains accuracy of the Crank–Nicolson...

A Novel Adaptive Active Disturbance Rejection Control Strategy to Improve the Stability and Robustness for a Wind Turbine Using a Doubly Fed Induction Generator
A novel and robust active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) strategy for variable speed wind turbine systems using a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) is presented in this paper. The DFIG is directly connected to the main utility grid by stator, and its rotor is connected through a back-to-back three phase power converter (AC/DC/AC). Due to the acoustic nature of wind and to ensure capturing maximum energy, a control strategy to extract the available maximum power from the wind turbine by...

Mycochemical Screening and Analysis, Antioxidant Activity, and Biochemical Composition of Fermentation Strain Snef1216 (Penicillium chrysogenum)
Antioxidants are the radical scavengers that inhibit peroxidation and other free-radical processes, which in return safeguard different organisms from various diseases attributed to radical reactions. Synthetic antioxidants inhibit free radicals, but they also have harmful side effects. However, mycochemicals of natural fungal origin are safe and best substitutes for harmful synthetic chemical antioxidants. The prime objectives of the study include appropriate qualitative and quantitative mycochemical...

In order to alleviate these issues, a lung nodule classification method based on a deep residual network is proposed. Abandoning traditional image processing methods and taking the 50-layer ResNet network structure...

As such, early detection mechanisms, especially at trace concentration, are essential for mitigation measures. In this work, a new, robust, and effective tool for trace metal detection and monitoring in aqueous solutions has been...

This new method differs from the greedy randomized Kaczmarz algorithm, which needs not to compute the residual vector of the whole linear system to determine the working rows.
