Phosphorus-rich stars with unusual abundances are challenging theoretical predictions
Nature Communications, Published online: 04 August 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-17649-9Current models of Galactic chemical evolution under predict the phosphorus we observe in our Solar System. Here, the authors show the discovery of 15 phosphorus-rich stars with a peculiar abundance pattern that challenges the present stellar nucleosynthesis theoretical predictions, but which could explain the missing source of phosphorus in the Galaxy.

Recycled arc mantle recovered from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge
Nature Communications, Published online: 04 August 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-17604-8Plate tectonics necessitates mantle recycling throughout Earth’s history, yet direct geochemical evidence for mantle reprocessing remains elusive. Here, the authors present evidence of recycled supra-subduction zone mantle wedge peridotite dredged from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge near 16°30′N.

The Human LL-37(17-29) antimicrobial peptide reveals a functional supramolecular structure
Nature Communications, Published online: 04 August 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-17736-xThe human antibacterial and immunomodulatory peptide LL-37 is a hCAP-18 protein cleavage product that self-assembles. Here, the authors present the human and gorilla LL-37 (17–29) crystal structures, revealing a self-assembly of amphipathic helices into a densely packed and elongated hexameric structure with a central pore and mutagenesis experiments support the role of self-assembly for antibacterial activity.

A hybrid achromatic metalens
Nature Communications, Published online: 04 August 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-17646-yMetalenses that correct chromatic aberration also suffer from reduced focusing efficiency. Here, the authors introduce a Hybrid Achromatic Metalens which merges a metalens and phase plate to offer improved focusing efficiency over a broad wavelength range and diffraction limited imaging performance.

MGMT genomic rearrangements contribute to chemotherapy resistance in gliomas
Nature Communications, Published online: 04 August 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-17717-0Chemotherapy resistance in recurrent gliomas is a large hurdle for successful therapy. Here, the authors show that some recurrent gliomas harbour O-6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) genomic rearrangements, and in vitro and in vivo these contribute to temozolomide resistance.

Low temperature synthesis of plasmonic molybdenum nitride nanosheets for surface enhanced Raman scattering
Nature Communications, Published online: 04 August 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-17628-0Molybdenum nitride is promising for catalysis, energy storage and Raman scattering, but it is synthesized under harsh conditions. Here the authors synthesize highly crystalline molybdenum nitride nanosheets using a relatively mild, non-aqueous solvothermal approach that can be extended to other nitrides.

Molecular design principles of Lysine-DOPA wet adhesion
Nature Communications, Published online: 04 August 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-17597-4Synergistic amino-catechol adhesives have attracted attention; however the topological relationship is still poorly understood. Here, the authors report on a study into the adhesion of a library of DOPA-lysine peptides to organic and inorganic surfaces and demonstrate the effects of spacers for energy dissipation.

Homogeneous and heterogeneous catalytic reduction of amides and related compounds using molecular hydrogen
Nature Communications, Published online: 04 August 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-17588-5Catalytic hydrogenation of amides is a pivotal chemical transformation for both research labs and chemical production in industry. Here, the authors comprehensively review this topic by including state-of-art homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts that can hydrogenate amides and related compounds.
