Lentibacillus panjinensis sp. nov., Isolated from Shrimp Paste, a Traditional Chinese Fermented Seafood
Abstract A Gram-positive, aerobic, motile and short rod-shaped bacterium, designated as strain G56T, was isolated from shrimp paste produced in Panjin, China. Grows in the presence of 1.0–25.0% (w/v) NaCl (optimum at 10%), pH 5.0–9.5 (optimally at 7.0) and 10–50 °C (optimally at 37 °C). Positive for catalase and oxidase activities, but lack the ability to reduce nitrate. Acids produce from d-ribose, d-xylose, d-galactose, glycerol and d-trehalose, but no acid is produced when salicin,...

Characterization of a Protease Hyper-Productive Mutant of Bacillus pumilus by Comparative Genomic and Transcriptomic Analysis
Abstract Bacillus pumilus BA06 has great potential for the production of alkaline proteases. To improve the protease yield, classical mutagenesis to combine the physical and chemical mutagens was performed to obtain a protease hyper-productive mutant SCU11. The full genome sequences of BA06 and SCU11 strains were assembled through DNA sequencing using the PacBio sequencing platform. By comparative genomics analysis, 147 SNPs and 15 InDels were found between these two genomes, which...

Neochloris oleoabundans Growth Evaluation Under Different Nitrogen:Phosphorus:Carbon Feeding Strategies
Abstract Microalgae are photosynthetic microorganisms known for their variety of compounds that can be useful for food, feed, pharmaceuticals, and fuel industries. Microalgae production costs have been one of the major obstacles to large-scale commercial production. Therefore, several studies are still being performed aiming to increase biomass by developing novel photobioreactor design and microalgae cultivation techniques. This work’s purpose is to increase Neochloris oleoabundans...

Evaluation of Teicoplanin Resistance Detected by Automated System in Coagulase Negative Staphylococci: A Comparison with Gradient Test and Broth Microdilution Methods
Abstract Upon the observation of an increase in teicoplanin resistance rates in coagulase negative staphylococci (CoNS) isolates determined by the automated system, we aimed to compare the automated system and gradient test methods with the gold standard broth microdilution method. In addition, the effect of standard antimicrobial susceptibility guidelines on teicoplanin susceptibility test results in CoNS was investigated. A total of 81 CoNS isolates, 52 resistant and 29 susceptible...

Gallic Acid an Agricultural Byproduct Modulates the Biofilm Matrix Exopolysaccharides of the Phytopathogen Ralstonia solanacearum
Abstract Ralstoniasolanacearum is a soil-borne plant pathogen which causes wilt disease in economically important crops of the Solanaceae family in tropical and temperate regions. As biofilm formation is the major virulence factor in R.solanacearum, research inputs are necessary to identify natural biofilm inhibitors to mitigate virulence of this bacterium. Hence in the present work, the anti-biofilm potential of phytochemical compound gallic acid (GA) isolated from an agricultural...

Ontogenetic habitat shifts reduce costly male–male interactions
Abstract Ontogenetic habitat shifts are predicted to increase the fitness and survival of individuals by allowing effective utilization of spatially distributed resources. Evidence supports nutritional requirements and predation pressure as drivers of habitat shifts. Likewise, intraspecific interactions are thought to lead to ontogenetic habitat shifts, however, empirical evidence is lacking. Here, we test if intraspecific male–male interactions are responsible for ontogenetic...

Revived Attention for Adult Craniopharyngioma
Exp Clin Endocrinol DiabetesDOI: 10.1055/a-1217-7282Craniopharyngioma as a rare tumor originating from cells of rathke’s pouch and representing 2–5% of all intracranial tumors is a rare and generally benign neoplasm of the central nervous system with two incidence peaks one in childhood and one after 40 years of age. Data on adult patients is scarce compared to childhood onset tumors, however the burden of disease...

Patient Satisfaction following Structural versus Preservation Rhinoplasty: A Systematic Review
Facial Plast SurgDOI: 10.1055/s-0040-1714268Recently, dorsal preservation rhinoplasty has been gained acceptance among facial plastic surgeons. Despite this, there is limited literature on patient satisfaction following preservation rhinoplasty. This systematic review aims to evaluate all studies quantifying patient satisfaction and to compare results between structural and dorsal preservation rhinoplasty. OVID Medline, EMBASE, and PubMed databases were searched. All studies from the years 2010 to...

Determinants of Women’s Drug Use During Pregnancy: Perspectives from a Qualitative Study
Abstract Introduction Drug use during pregnancy can have negative effects on maternal and child health. However, there is a dearth of data regarding drug use among pregnant women in Kenya, where illicit drug use is on the rise. In this paper, we report factors influencing women’s decisions to use drugs during pregnancy. Methods In 2015, we conducted...

Mechanisms Through Which a Family Caregiver Coaching Intervention Might Reduce Anxiety Among Children in Military Households
Abstract Objectives Children of injured or disabled veterans and service members may be at risk for mental health and adjustment problems due to household stress. Yet, there are few widely available interventions to address the needs of this population. Reducing distress and improving coping skills of the parent who cares for the injured or disabled adult may improve child outcomes. This paper examines whether changes in caregiver psychosocial...

Between shark and ray: The evolutionary advantage of the sea angels
Angel sharks are sharks, but with their peculiarly flat body they rather resemble rays. An international research team has now investigated the origin of this body shape. The results illustrate how these sharks evolved into highly specialized, exclusively bottom-dwelling ambush predators and thus also contribute to a better understanding of their threat from environmental changes.

Abstract Evaluate, through a randomized clinical trial, the efficacy of brushing associated with oral irrigation in maintaining implant and overdenture hygiene. Thirty-eight participants, who had a clinically acceptable conventional maxillary complete denture and mandibular overdenture retained by either implants or mini-implants using an O-ring-retained system, were enrolled to participate in the study. They were instructed to use two different hygiene methods, in a random sequence...

Age-specific colorectal cancer incidence rate in the world
In order to make a comparison of the age-specific colorectal cancer incidence rate between Japan and other countries, we abstracted cancer incidence rate from the Cancer Incidence in Five Continents Vol. XI (CI5) (1). The International Agency for Research on Cancer provides the CI5 databases on the incidence of cancer recorded by cancer registries (regional and national) worldwide. We used cancer incidence rate in five countries in Asia (China, India, Japan, Republic of Korea and Thailand), three...
