Early‐onset parkinsonism is a manifestation of the PPP2R5D p.E200K mutation
PPP2R5D‐ related neurodevelopmental disorder is characterized by a range of neurodevelopmental and behavioral manifestations. We report the association of early‐onset parkinsonism with the PPP2R5D p.E200K mutation. Clinical characterization and exome sequencing were performed on three patients, with postmortem neuropathologic examination for one patient. All patients had mild developmental delay and developed levodopa‐responsive parkinsonism between ages 25 to 40. The PPP2R5D c.598G>A (p.E200K)...

Circulating metabolites differentiate acute ischemic stroke from stroke mimics
Objective Early discrimination of patients with ischemic stroke (IS) from stroke mimics (SM) poses a diagnostic challenge. The circulating metabolome might reflect pathophysiological events related to acute IS. Here, we investigated the utility of early metabolic changes for differentiating IS from SM. Methods We performed untargeted metabolomics on serum samples obtained from patients with IS (N=508) and SM (N=349; defined by absence of a DWI positive lesion on MRI) who presented to hospital...

A Parietal Region Processing Numerosity of Observed Actions: an FMRI study
ABSTRACT When observing others’ behavior, it is important to perceive not only the identity of the observed actions, but also the number of times they were performed. Given the mounting evidence implicating posterior parietal cortex in action observation, and in particular that of manipulative actions, the aim of this study was to identify the parietal region, if any, that contributes to the processing of observed‐manipulative‐action numerosity, using the functional magnetic resonance imaging technique....

Measuring vergence and fixation disparity in 3D space
Abstract As the eyes continuously move in 3D space, they rarely converge at the exact depth of the plane even when fixating a 2D image or computer screen. Rather, the lines of gaze measured by eye movement recordings show some misalignment so‐called fixation disparity. Fixation disparity occurs in front of or behind the plane and the eyes may also be lagged vertically. For those reasons, vision research requires mathematical tools to calculate where exactly the lines of gaze cross the stimulus plane....

A multimodal study of the effects of tDCS on dorsolateral prefrontal and temporo‐parietal areas during dichotic listening
ABSTRACT The underlying neural mechanisms of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), especially beyond the primary motor cortex, remain unclear. Several studies examined tDCS effects on either functional activity, neurotransmitters, or behavior but few investigated those aspects together to reveal how the brain responds to tDCS. The objective is to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of tDCS using a multimodal approach that extends from behavioral to neurotransmitter levels of explanation....

Can the occipital alpha‐phase speed up visual detection through a real‐time EEG‐based brain‐computer interface (BCI)?
Abstract Electrical brain oscillations reflect fluctuations in neural excitability. Fluctuations in the alpha band (α, 8‐12 Hz) in the occipito‐parietal cortex are thought to regulate sensory responses, leading to cyclic variations in visual perception. Inspired by this theory, some past and recent studies have addressed the relationship between α‐phase from extra‐cranial EEG and behavioural responses to visual stimuli in humans. The latest studies have used offline approaches to confirm α‐gated...

Persons post-stroke improve step length symmetry by walking asymmetrically
Restoration of step length symmetry is a common rehabilitation goal after stroke. Persons post-stroke often retain the ability to walk with symmetric step lengths (“symmetric steps”); however, the resulting wa...

An arrow that missed the mark: a pediatric case report of remarkable neurologic improvement following penetrating spinal cord injury
Abstract Penetrating spinal cord injuries are rare in children but result in devastating impacts on long-term morbidity and mortality—with little known about the recovery capacity in this age group. We present the case of an eight-year-old child who sustained a penetrating injury through the right anterior thorax. Thoracic CT showed the arrow tip extending through the spinal canal at T6. Neurologic examination revealed no motor or sensory function below T6. The arrow was surgically...

Early neuropsychological profile of children diagnosed with a brain tumor predicts later academic difficulties at school age
Abstract Purpose Children diagnosed with a brain tumor (BT) in the first years of their life are at high risk of cognitive and neuropsychological problems, more school difficulties, and an increased need for educational support. To improve this condition, it will be beneficial to be able to identify the neuropsychological variables that are early predictors of school competences at later ages. ...

Visual function tests including the role of optical coherence tomography in neurofibromatosis 1
Abstract Optic pathway glioma (OPG) is a common and significant complication of neurofibromatosis 1 (NF-1) that might lead to vision loss. The main reason to treat OPG is to preserve vision. Tumor location along the visual pathway largely dictates the presenting signs and symptoms. Clinical ophthalmic evaluation is focused on optic nerve functions including evaluation of pupils’ reaction to light, visual acuity, color vision, and visual field, as well as optic nerve appearance....
