Tumor hypoxia is a major metabolic biomarker, associated with inferior outcome and increased resistance against chemo- and radiation therapy (CRT) [1]. Positron emission tomography (PET) using [18F]-fluoromisonidazole (FMISO) or [18F]-fluoroazomycin arabinoside tracers constitutes the gold standard of hypoxia imaging in vivo [2,3]. Several groups have shown that in head-and-neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), tumor oxygenation changes dynamically during CRT, and changes detected by repeat PET scans...
Radiotherapy (RT) is widely used in the adjuvant and curative treatment of thoracic cancers such as mediastinal lymphoma, breast, lung and esophageal cancer, to improve overall survival. However, thoracic RT may cause incidental RT dose to the heart with a subsequent risk of radiation associated heart disease [1–3]. For both breast cancer and Hodgkin lymphoma patients, a linear dose-response relationship between mean heart dose (MHD) and the risk of heart disease has been demonstrated [4–6].
COVID-19 outbreak forced significant changes in the management of non-communicable diseases worldwide including cancer. The first COVID-19 case in Turkey was announced on March 10th, and the pandemic reached its peak in the last days of April 2020. Radiotherapy departments faced a unique challenge to provide a virus-free environment for both patients and staff while operating continuously.Fig 1.Table 1.
In response to the disruptive effect of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in cancer management in the Philippines, four cancer centers created a collaborative strategic action plan in cancer management and workflow. This was aligned with the position set by the Philippine Radiation Oncology Society (PROS)[1], and Philippine Medical Society of Oncology (PSMO)[2]. It consists of four phases: screening, evaluation, treatment /management and disposition. Each phase includes an algorithm and core domains...
Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), also known as the “Canton tumor”, is one of the most common cancers in southern China. In Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Cancer Registry has noted that NPC was the 6th most common cancer in males with 599 new cases and an incidence rate of 17.7 in 100,000 in 2016. The mortality of NPC ranked 8th in male and 10th in both sexes [1]. The first-line treatment for nasopharyngeal cancer is radiation therapy. Xerostomia is a common, debilitating complication of radiation therapy...
ESTRO surveyed European radiation oncology department heads to evaluate the impact of COVID-19. Telemedicine was used in 78% of the departments, and 60% reported a decline in patient volume. Use of protective measures was implemented on a large scale, but shortages of personal protective equipment were present in more than half of the departments.
Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the most common gastrointestinal malignancies worldwide. Although its incidence has decreased, GC still serves as the third leading cause of cancer-associated deaths, particularly in Eastern Asia [1]. Currently, patients with advanced GC are recommended to receive surgical resection, adjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy for improvement of the treatment in line with the US National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines [2]. However, previous studies revealed that...
Spine metastases are a common cause of morbidity and mortality in cancer patients with a prevalence of up to 30-50% [1]. Stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) has been increasingly utilized in treating spine metastases for local control and pain relief [2–6] with overall local control of approximately 80-90% among the largest published series [7–10]. One common toxicity of spine SBRT is vertebral compression fracture (VCF), which has been observed in 11-39% patients undergoing spine SBRT [4,7,11,12].
In many centres Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is routinely used for the locoregional staging of anal cancer, as it offers excellent soft tissue contrast for detailed anatomical assessment of the anal canal and its surrounding structures. Recently, there has been a growing interest in the use of MRI for radiotherapy planning [1]. This is because MRI – instead or in combination with CT, and in addition to digital rectal examination – aids in identification and delineation of the radiotherapy target...
The standard of care for curative treatment of patients with locoregional advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN) is either platinum-based radiochemotherapy (RCT) or bioradiation (i.e. radiotherapy (RT) in combination with the monoclonal antibody against epithelial growth factor receptor, cetuximab) [1,2]. In addition, the combination of cisplatin-based palliative chemotherapy and cetuximab improved overall survival in metastasized SCCHN [3]. A biologically intriguing approach...

It has a highly conserved kinesin motor region at its N-terminus, which is followed by a central coiled-coil region and a C-terminus cargo-binding domain that contains a cysteine-rich motif. It is aberrantly expressed in a variety of cancers. Front Neurosci. 2020;14:526 Authors: Mabrouk OS, Chen S, Edwards AL, Yang M, Hirst WD, Graham DL Abstract Leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2) mutations are among the most significant genetic risk factors for developing late onset Parkinson's disease (PD). To understand whether a therapeutic can modulate LRRK2 levels as a...

Front Neurosci. 2020;14:523 Authors: Borges U, Knops L, Laborde S, Klatt S, Raab M Abstract Background: Individuals are able to perform goal-directed behaviors thanks to executive functions. According to the neurovisceral integration model, executive functions are upregulated by brain areas such as the...

Front Neurosci. 2020;14:518 Authors: Shenk J, Lohkamp KJ, Wiesmann M, Kiliaan AJ Abstract Quantitative characterization of mouse activity, locomotion and walking patterns requires the monitoring of position and activity over long periods of time. Manual behavioral phenotyping, however, is time and skill-intensive, vulnerable to researcher bias and often stressful for the animals....

Front Neurosci. 2020;14:498 Authors: Madureira M, Connor-Robson N, Wade-Martins R Abstract It has been 15 years since the Leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2) gene was identified as the most common genetic cause for Parkinson's disease (PD). The two most common mutations are the LRRK2-G2019S, located in the kinase domain, and the LRRK2-R1441C, located in the ROC-COR domain. While the LRRK2-G2019S...
