Ambivalent Economics of Middle-Class Drug Dealers
Former white and middle-class cocaine and cannabis dealers talk about their often contradictory “careers in dope.” When anthropologists and sociologists study illegal drug dealing (or anything else), we tend to be wary of such economic orthodoxy as “self-interest.” Our analyses rely, instead, on culture or subcultures or deviance with attention to how social inequalities give rise to patterns of behavior. Drawing a line of cocaine. danielfoster437/Flickr (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0) Deeper dynamics of...

Reading Complaints
What might a letter of complaint to a university truth commission reveal about Brazil’s political climate and the multiple lives of documents?  The letter wobbled in brief, nervous tremors between Pedro’s mature hands—the left one adorned with a large, silver watch. He moved slightly in his chair to greet the new arrivals, making sure that the attendees promptly took their seats around the oval table to begin an already late meeting. They were gathering to discuss the future projects on which...

Presumptive Dipylidium caninum Infection in a Toddler
We report a female toddler who presented repetitively with a chief complaint of motile white worms seen in her diapers. Symptoms of perianal itching and visualization of visible motile worms persisted for 6 months despite being treated with multiple courses of albendazole causing a lot of frustration and distress to the caregivers. The characteristics of the worms by inspection along with the presence of 3 pet dogs are consistent with Dipylidium caninum.

Water Availability Impacts Habitat Use by Red-Fronted Lemurs ( Eulemur rufifrons ): An Experimental and Observational Study
Abstract With the predicted increase in extreme weather events as a result of global climate change, animals living in dry or seasonally dry habitats are likely to experience dramatic fluctuations in water availability from season to season and year to year. Understanding how animals respond to short-term changes in water availability is paramount for future conservation and management of water-dependent wild populations. We investigated how short-term changes to the availability...

Evolution of multivariate wing allometry in schizophoran flies (Diptera: Schizophora)
Abstract The proximate and ultimate mechanisms underlying scaling relationships as well as their evolutionary consequences remain an enigmatic issue in evolutionary biology. Here I investigate the evolution of wing allometries in the Schizophora, a group of higher Diptera that radiated about 65 million years ago, by studying static allometries in five species using multivariate approaches. Despite the vast ecological diversity observed in contemporary members of the Schizophora and independent...

Three‐dimensional characterisation of osteocyte volumes at multiple scales, and its relationship with bone biology and genome evolution in ray‐finned fishes
Abstract Osteocytes, cells embedded within the bone mineral matrix, inform on key aspects of vertebrate biology. In particular, a relationship between volumes of the osteocytes and bone growth and/or genome size has been proposed for several tetrapod lineages. However, the variation in osteocyte volume across different scales is poorly characterised, and mostly relies on incomplete, two‐dimensional information. In this study, we characterise the variation of osteocyte volumes in ray‐finned fishes...

Abstract Transcranial photobiomodulation is an innovative method for the stimulation of neural activity which consists of the exposure of neural tissue to low-level light irradiance. In the present study, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) were used as light source due to their practicality and low cost. The objective was to analyze the effects of transcranial photobiomodulation using 945-nm LED in university students with anxiety and depression. Sample was composed of 22 individuals...

Abstract Sperm morphology, as an indicator of fertility, is a critical tool in semen analysis. In this study, a smartphone-based hybrid system that fully automates the sperm morphological analysis is introduced with the aim of eliminating unwanted human factors. Proposed hybrid system consists of two progressive steps: automatic segmentation of possible sperm shapes and classification of normal/ab-normal sperms. In the segmentation step, clustering techniques with/without group...

Love and Power: Grau and Pury (2014) as a Case Study in the Challenges of X-Phi Replication
Abstract Grau and Pury (Review of Philosophy and Psychology, 5, 155–168, 2014) reported that people’s views about love are related to their views about reference. This surprising effect was however not replicated in Cova et al.’s (in press) replication study. In this article, we show that the replication failure is probably due to the replication’s low power and that a metaanalytic reanalysis of the result in Cova et al. suggests that the effect reported in Grau and Pury is real....

Neuroblastoma is the most common type of extracranial solid tumor during childhood. Clinical presentation includes ipsilateral ptosis, myosis, anhydrosis and enophthalmos. The case of a 2.5-year-old boy who had a complaint of constriction of the left pupil for 3 days is presented. In the physical examination, the pupil of the OD was moderately dilated; there was myosis on the OS and ptosis on the left eyelid. Horner syndrome was considered due to these findings.
