Letter to the Editor in regards to Fasting vs. bedtime thyroxine ingestion
Abstract The recent meta‐analysis by Pang et al.(1) exploring the effect of L‐thyroxine administration before breakfast versus at bedtime concludes that either approach results in similar outcomes. This conclusion stands in stark contrast to another excellent study done examining the timing issues of Pre breakfast vs. with breakfast or at Bedtime (2). Bach‐Huynh TG et al. clearly demonstrate the superiority of pre‐breakfast LT4 ingestion when taken 60 minutes before the first meal of the day with...

Dealing with sleep problems during home confinement due to the COVID‐19 outbreak: practical recommendations from a task force of the European CBT‐I Academy
Abstract In the current global home confinement situation due to the COVID‐19 outbreak, most individuals are exposed to an unprecedented stressful situation of unknown duration. This may not only increase daytime stress, anxiety and depression levels but also disrupt sleep. Importantly, because of the fundamental role that sleep plays in emotion regulation, sleep disturbance can have direct consequences upon next day emotional functioning. In this paper we summarize what is known about the stress‐sleep...

Sleep among primary care physicians–Association with overtime, night duties and strategies to counteract poor sleep quality
Abstract Physicians belong to the risk group for sleep disorders as a result of work related stress, excessive working time, large amount of on‐call duties and shift work. Poor sleep quality of healthcare providers threatens not only their safety, but also the safety of their patients. This study examines if there are any differences in how working either long hours or at night duties relates to self‐reported sleep time, sleep quality and daytime sleepiness in primary care physicians. We analyzed...

Overexpression of miR‐199/214 is a distinctive feature of iron‐ and asbestos‐induced sarcomatoid mesothelioma in rats
Abstract Malignant mesothelioma (MM) is one of the most lethal tumors in humans. The onset of MM is linked to exposure to asbestos, which generates reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS are believed to be derived from the frustrated phagocytosis and the iron in asbestos. To explore the pathogenesis of MM, peritoneal MM was induced in rats by the repeated intraperitoneal injection of iron saccharate and nitrilotriacetate. In this study, we employed microarray techniques to screen the microRNA (miR)...

Corrected HPV Vaccination Rate for Each Birth Fiscal Year in Japan
Abstract In Japan, the serious adverse events after HPV vaccination were widely reported in the media. The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) announced the suspension of the governmental recommendation of HPV vaccine in 2013, and the inoculation rate has sharply declined. The estimated inoculation rate for each birth fiscal year (FY) announced by the MHLW and the actual numbers for each birth FY surveyed by the local governments were far apart. Especially, the cumulative vaccination...

Ribosomal Protein S6 promotes stem‐like characters in glioma cells
Abstract Glioblastoma multiform (GBM), a lethal brain tumor developing in the white matter of the adult brain, contains a small population of GBM stem cells (GSCs), which potentially cause chemotherapeutic resistance and tumor recurrence. However, the mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis and maintenance of GSCs remain largely unknown. A recent study reported that incorporation of ribosomes and ribosomal proteins into somatic cells promoted lineage trans‐differentiation toward multipotency. This...

Dose profiles and x-ray energy optimization for microbeam radiation therapy by high-dose, high resolution dosimetry using Sm-doped fluoroaluminate glass plates and Monte Carlo transport simulation
Microbeam radiation therapy (MRT) utilizes highly collimated synchrotron generated x-rays to create narrow planes of high dose radiation for the treatment of tumors. Individual microbeams have a typical width of 30–50 µm and are separated by a distance of 200–500 µm. The dose delivered at the center of the beam is lethal to cells in the microbeam path, on the order of hundreds of Grays (Gy). The tissue between each microbeam is spared and helps aid in the repair of adjacent damaged tissue. ...

MR to CT synthesis with multicenter data in the pelvic area using a conditional generative adversarial network
The establishment of an MRI-only workflow in radiotherapy depends on the ability to generate an accurate synthetic CT (sCT) for dose calculation. Previously proposed methods have used a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) for fast sCT generation in order to simplify the clinical workflow and reduces uncertainties. In the current paper we use a conditional Generative Adversarial Network (cGAN) framework called pix2pixHD to create a robust model prone to multicenter data. This study included...

Automatic bi-objective parameter tuning for inverse planning of high-dose-rate prostate brachytherapy
We present an automatic bi-objective parameter-tuning approach for inverse planning methods for high-dose-rate prostate brachytherapy, which aims to overcome the difficult and time-consuming manual parameter tuning that is currently required to obtain patient-specific high-quality treatment plans. We modelled treatment planning as a bi-objective optimization problem, in which dose-volume-based planning criteria related to target coverage are explicitly separated from organ-sparing criteria....
