Clinical Characteristics of Cataplectic Attacks in Type 1 Narcolepsy
Abstract Purpose of Review Narcolepsy is a central disorder of hypersomnolence with symptoms of excessive daytime sleepiness, sleep paralysis, and cataplexy. Cataplexy is the sudden loss of muscle tone in either the face, neck, trunk, and/or limbs, leading to a loss of voluntary muscle control. This article reviews recent research on the clinical characteristics of cataplexy. ...

Temporal associations between sleep slow oscillations, spindles and ripples
Abstract The systems consolidation of memory during slow wave‐sleep (SWS) is thought to rely on a dialogue between hippocampus and neocortex that is regulated by an interaction between neocortical slow oscillations (SOs), thalamic spindles, and hippocampal ripples. Here, we examined the occurrence rates of and the temporal relationships between these oscillatory events in rats, to identify the possible direction of interaction between these events under natural conditions. To facilitate comparisons...

A Time‐Efficient Method to Determine Parameters for Measurement of Short Interval Intracortical Inhibition for Quadriceps
Abstract Short‐interval intracortical inhibition (SICI) is often assessed to investigate inhibitory responses in the primary motor cortex representation of the quadriceps. However, determining appropriate paired‐pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) parameters to optimise SICI measurement can be impractical and time‐consuming. This study investigated the intensity required to elicit maximal and 50% of maximum inhibition, and the test‐retest reliability of a time‐efficient approach for SICI...

Initial memory consolidation and the synaptic tagging and capture hypothesis
Abstract Everyday memories are retained automatically in the hippocampus and then decay very rapidly. Memory retention can be boosted when novel experiences occur shortly before or shortly after the time of memory encoding via a memory stabilisation process called ‘initial memory consolidation’. The dopamine release and new protein synthesis in the hippocampus during a novel experience are crucial for this novelty‐induced memory boost. The mechanisms underlying initial memory consolidation are not...

Weakly correlated activity of pallidal neurons in behaving monkeys
Abstract The basal ganglia play a crucial role in the control of voluntary movements. Neurons in both the external and internal segments of the globus pallidus, the connecting and output nuclei of the basal ganglia, respectively, change their firing rates in relation to movements. Firing rate changes of movement‐related neurons seem to convey signals for motor control. On the other hand, coincident spikes among neurons, i.e., correlated activity, may also contribute to motor control. To address...

Chronic fluoxetine or ketamine treatment differentially affects brain energy homeostasis which is not exacerbated in mice with trait suboptimal mitochondrial function
Abstract Antidepressants have been shown to influence mitochondrial function directly, and suboptimal mitochondrial function (SMF) has been implicated in complex psychiatric disorders. In the current study, we used a mouse model for trait SMF to test the hypothesis that chronic fluoxetine treatment in mice subjected to chronic stress would negatively impact brain bioenergetics, a response that would be more pronounced in mice with trait SMF. In contrast, we hypothesized that chronic ketamine treatment...

The astrocytic‐neuronal crosstalk gets jammed: alternative perspectives on the onset of neuropsychiatric disorders
Abstract Investigating interactions of glia cells and synapses during development and in adulthood is the focus of several research programmes which aim at understanding the neurobiology of brain physiological and pathological processes. Both glia‐specific released and membrane‐bound proteins play essential roles in the development, maintenance and functionality of synaptic connections. Alterations in synaptic contacts in specific brain areas are hallmarks of several brain diseases, such as major...

What exactly is missing here? The sensory processing of unpredictable omissions is modulated by the specificity of expected action‐effects
Abstract We select our actions according to the desired outcomes; for instance, piano players press certain keys to generate specific musical notes. It is well‐described that the omission of a predicted action‐effect may elicit prediction error signals in the brain, but what happens in the case of simultaneous effector‐specific (by contrast to effector–unspecific) predictions? To answer this question, we asked participants to press left and right keys to generate tones A and B; based on the action‐effect...

Maternal separation induces long-term oxidative stress alterations and increases anxiety-like behavior of male Balb/cJ mice
Abstract Early life stress (ELS) exposure is a well-known risk factor for the development of psychiatric conditions, including anxiety disorder. Preclinical studies show that maternal separation (MS), a classical model of ELS, causes hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis alterations, a key contributor to the stress response modulation. Given that HPA axis activation has been shown to induce oxidative stress, it is possible to hypothesize that oxidative stress mediates the relationship...

The volition, the mode of movement selection and the readiness potential
Abstract A growing body of evidence suggests that the mode of movement selection is relevant for the readiness potential, namely, internal (or free) selection of movements is associated with increased readiness potential amplitudes compared to predetermined or externally guided selection. It is little acknowledged, however, that this finding may be ascribed to the different expression of volition (i.e., conscious experience of choice) rather than to the mode of movement selection...

Spring-like leg dynamics and neuromuscular strategies for hopping on a mini-trampoline in adults and children
Abstract Improved balance control is an often-cited potential benefit for trampoline interventions. However, it is unknown whether the soft, elastic surface of a trampoline elicits different motion and neuromuscular strategies between adults and children. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to evaluate the center-of-mass (COM) dynamics and neuromuscular strategies for hopping on a mini-trampoline in adults and children. Fourteen children aged 7–12 years and 15 adults aged 18–35 years...

Repair of giant lumbosacral pseudomeningocele with fast-resorbing polymer mesh in a pediatric patient operated for posterior dysraphism
Abstract Lumbar pseudomeningocele is a common complication of spinal surgery. It is caused by dural defect, and it consists of extradural collection of cerebrospinal fluid communicating with subarachnoid space. Usually it is small, asymptomatic, and self-limiting. In case of persistence, common treatments include bedrest, puncture and compressive dressing, subcutaneous or subarachnoid lumbar drainage, surgical re-exploration for durotomy closure, and blood patch. Fast-resorbing...

Meningocele tourniquet syndrome
Abstract Tourniquet syndrome is a rare condition where a tourniquet applied to an appendage leads to an obstructed blood flow and subsequent ischemic injury. Meningomyelocele and meningocele are common birth defects, and involvement of meningocele in tourniquet syndrome is never mentioned in the literature. We managed a 10-day-old male child presenting with infected lumber meningocele with a tourniquet tied at its base. It is being presented with review of relevant literature.

Abstract Background Pai syndrome is a rare idiopathic developmental condition characterized by midline craniofacial abnormalities. It was originally described as the presence of a median cleft lip, cutaneous polyps of the nasal mucosa and face, and midline lipomas of the central nervous system, mostly at the corpus callosum. However, there is great phenotypical variability and these characteristics are rarely all present at once. ...
