Neuro-fuzzy patch-wise R-CNN for multiple sclerosis segmentation
Abstract The segmentation of the lesion plays a core role in diagnosis and monitoring of multiple sclerosis (MS). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the most frequent image modality used to evaluate such lesions. Because of the massive amount of data, manual segmentation cannot be achieved within a sensible time that restricts the usage of accurate quantitative measurement in clinical practice. Therefore, the need for effective automated segmentation techniques is critical. However,...

Influence of bone density, screw size and surgical procedure on orthodontic mini-implant placement – part A: temperature development
The aim of this in vitro study was to determine the influence of bone density, orthodontic mini-implant (OMI) size, and the surgical procedure on temperature increase during implant site osteotomy and placement. OMIs of different sizes (2.0×7, 2.3×7, 2.0×11, and 2.3×11mm) were placed in artificial bone blocks of different densities (D1–D4). Optionally, the drilling and insertion angle was 90° or 60° to the bone surface. A total of 160 OMIs were inserted, and predrilling was performed in 80 cases.

The Oral and Maxillofacial Objective Structured Assessment of Technical Skills (OMOSATS) examination: a pilot study
The aim of this study was to develop a simulated technical skills examination specific to oral and maxillofacial surgery, assessing the validity of the test and its psychometric properties and obtaining feedback on the examination from both resident trainees and expert evaluators. The Oral and Maxillofacial Objective Structured Assessment of Technical Skills (OMOSATS) examination is a simulated procedure-based eight-station technical skills examination. Fourteen oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS)...

Histologic findings and related diagnostic methods in condylar hyperactivity
Condylar hyperactivity (CH) is a rare condition that entails a progressive deviation and deformation of the mandible. There is no consensus regarding characteristic histopathological features or a standardized diagnostic process; thus, histopathological analysis of the condyle cannot confirm or exclude an active CH after condylectomy is performed. An electronic search was performed in Medline, Embase, Web of Science, LILACS and grey literature up to December 2019. Additionally, a manual search was...

Effects of throat packs during orthognathic surgery: a double-blind randomized controlled clinical trial
Throat packs are commonly used in maxillofacial surgeries. However, the evidence to support the benefits of their use is controversial. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of throat packs in preventing postoperative nausea and vomiting, and their influence on the incidence of sore throat and dysphagia in patients undergoing orthognathic surgery. This was a prospective double-blind randomized study with 54 patients, who were randomized to two groups: with throat pack (n = 27) and...

Prognostic Value of Admission Mean Corpuscular Volume for Major Adverse Cardiovascular Events following Stent Implantation in Nondiabetic and Diabetic Patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome
Background. One of the key concerns of the clinician is to identify and manage risk factors for major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) in nondiabetic and diabetic patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) undergoing stent implantation. Mean corpuscular volume (MCV) is a marker of erythrocyte size and activity and is associated with prognosis of cardiovascular disease. However, the role of admission MCV in predicting MACEs following stent implantation in diabetes mellitus (DM), non-DM, or whole...

Targeted Metabolomics for Plasma Amino Acids and Carnitines in Patients with Metabolic Syndrome Using HPLC-MS/MS
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a health disorder characterized by metabolic abnormalities that predict an increased risk to develop cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes. Biomarkers can provide an insight into the novel mechanism for MetS and can be potentially used for personalized response to therapies. We exploited a targeted HPLC-MS/MS method to characterize plasma amino acids and carnitine metabolic profile in MetS patients. A training set (40 cases and 40 controls) and validation set...

Association of Uric Acid in Serum and Urine with Arterial Stiffness: Hanzhong Adolescent Hypertension Study
Background. Hyperuricemia has long been associated with increased cardiovascular risk, and arterial stiffness is proposed as a mediator. The present study is aimed at examining the associations of uric acid (UA) in blood and urine with arterial stiffness in a Chinese cohort. Methods. A total of 2296 participants (mean age: 43.0 years) from our previously established cohort of Hanzhong Adolescent Hypertension Study were included. The participants were classified as subjects with or without arterial...

Neonate Born to a Mother with a Diagnosis of Suspected Intra-Amniotic Infection versus COVID-19 or Both
A diagnosis of intra-amniotic infection is typically made based on clinical criteria, including maternal intrapartum fever and one or more of the following: maternal leukocytosis, purulent cervical drainage, or fetal tachycardia. The diagnosis can also be made in patients with an isolated fever of 39°C, or greater, without any other clinical risk factors present. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by the virus SARS-CoV-2, has been noted to have varying signs and symptoms over the course...

We report three critically ill pediatric patients (aged 6–10 years), presenting with features of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) from April 4 to May 10, 2020, to a tertiary-care center in New Jersey, United States. All patients tested positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and were previously healthy. Clinical presentations were similar with fever, abdominal pain, gastrointestinal complaints, and/or rash. One patient had altered mental...

Population genetics: past, present, and future
Abstract We present selected topics of population genetics and molecular phylogeny. As several excellent review articles have been published and generally focus on European and American scientists, here, we emphasize contributions by Japanese researchers. Our review may also be seen as a belated 50-year celebration of Motoo Kimura’s early seminal paper on the molecular clock, published in 1968.
